The third is a 16Mhz 68030 with 16MHz 68881 FPU, but has an 040 and a
gfx. card; so it's the best IMO.

Sort of, I would only pay about =A3550 for it since it has no gfx. card;
only ECS. :) The 80486 birdgeboard sounds very good though... :)

Subject: [afb] WBPerplexity
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Hello people, I was pleasantly surprised to see my little
game "WBPerplexity" on the cover disk of Amiga Format this month,
however inside the magazine it says something like the 15 puzzle (4x4)
can't be solved. Well this is half-true, and so here is an extract
taken from the Britannica encyclopaedia about this
"The Fifteen Puzzle was invented by Sam Loyd the elder about 1878 and
is also known as the Boss Puzzle, Jeu de Taquin, and Diablotin. It
became popular all over Europe almost at once. It consists essentially
of a shallow square tray that holds 15 small square counters numbered
from 1 to 15, and one square blank space. With the 15 squares initially
placed in random order and with the blank space in the lower right-hand
corner, the puzzle is to rearrange them in numerical order by sliding
only, with the blank space ending up back in the lower right-hand
corner. It may overwhelm the reader to learn that there are more than
20,000,000,000,000 possible different arrangements that the pieces
(including the blank space) can assume. But in 1879 two American
mathematicians proved that only one-half of all possible initial
arrangements, or about 10,000,000,000,000, admitted of a solution. The
mathematical analysis is as follows. Basically, no matter what path it
takes, as long as it ends its journey in the lower right-hand corner of
the tray, any numeral must pass through an even number of boxes. In the
normal position of the squares, regarded row by row from left to right,
each number is larger than all the preceding numbers; i.e., no number
precedes any number smaller than itself. In any other than the normal
arrangement, one or more numbers will precede others smaller than
themselves. Every such instance is called an inversion. For example, in
the sequence 9, 5, 3, 4, the 9 precedes three numbers smaller than
itself and the 5 precedes two numbers smaller than itself, making a
total of five inversions. If the total number of all the inversions in
a given arrangement is even, the puzzle can be solved by bringing the
squares back to the normal arrangement; if the total number of
inversions is odd, the puzzle cannot be solved."
Fortunately, I'm currently working on an update for WBPerplexity,
which will allow you to stop the above "impossibilities" from
occurring. Instead Randomising tile placement, the next version will
take a completed puzzle and jumble it instead, making it entirely
possible for it to be solved.
Additional puzzle sets for WBPerplexity will soon be available from my
site at: http://www.enginenine.cjb.net

Matt Briggs

see if the thread has already been responded to enough that it needs no

No, I'm not. I've said on numerous occasions that people should shut up

selectively deaf (well, selectively can't read).

Sure. Here you go:

=B7 SMD motherboards with only three or four of the necessary chips on
=B7 motherboards that don't have proper tracks
=B7 keyboards that have been stamped on

Hi,
There's a Amiga quiz, you can get to it via http://www.amiga.org.
Quite good actually, I got 26/30, not the highest on the high score
list (a certain fellow Devonian called Tom Underwood got 30! :). A
little bit of light entertainment. Mind you I'm meant to be
researching stuff for English lang. at the moment; instead i did the
Amiga quiz... :)
I got the one about which version of Amiga Workbench was released last
wrong and, the unbuffered dos.library command (cannot recall of the top
of my head!) and another two... :)
Aaaaaanyway - back to Eng. Lang. for the time being... :)
All the best,
Nick.

Hi Erol,
It sounds a very nice machine; if you have =A3800, snap it up NOW! :)
The A3000T is a lovely lovely Amiga; I used one once, and I really wish
I could afford one... :)
All the best,

You need to give more information on what you're doing when the underrun
occurs?
Which software are you using?
Are you trying to burn on the fly, or from an image file?
Is the source on SCSI or IDE?
At what point does the underrun occurs? Is this consistent?
Does changing the buffer size make any difference?

Mailbombing breaks most ISPs' terms and could result in your account
being closed.
Mailbombing is extremely easy to do, I once knocked up a very short
ARexx script to show just how easy it really is. Short of sending
obscene mail to the MD's wife, it's probably the easiest way of getting
your ISP account closed.

Are you sure that it is the CAN that is having the problem. I keep getting

Hi Matthew,

was going to buy. Well a couple of days ago that bargain arrived.
(=A360+=A310 p&p for an A1200, Blizzard 1230 030/50MHz accelerator card
with 8Mb, 170Mb HDD, Multisync monitor, external 1.76Mb XL floppy drive
(whatever this is - HD floppy drive even?), several leads, joysticks,
mice etc. and a sh*tload of floppy disks in disk boxes!)
Wow! :) Wish when I got my A1200 in 1996 I got that for my money! :)
I paid =A3165 for a vanilla 1200, no hard disk, 1 floppy drive, a few
games as well...

Yes, PCMCIA rev. 2.0
> The 22-pin array by the expansion port that looks like it should
have been 40-pin - Clock port?
The LHS of the clock port is for another meg of chip RAM on prototype
1meg A1200 machines. The RHS (22pins) are the useful ones for IO
/Sound Cards etc.
> The rev. is 1d4 - what does this mean in terms of those problems
that Eyetech etc. will fix for U?
Some 1d4 will be fine; most start to give you problems when you add
anything faster than a 68040/060/PPC.
> On the 3.0 ROMS, pins 3->9 (from top left) of both chips have
been wired together. Why? Is this supposed to be done?
I wouldn't know, because my 1B A1200 (c. 1992) has 3.0 ROMs an there is
no wire. Some A500s need pin 1 connected to pin 31, but afaik, what
the wire on 1200 is there for, i don`t know! :) If it works (the
Amiga); then leave it! :)
> What can ppl tell me about the Blizzard 1230 card, i.e. max. RAM,
what type, SCSI or not (there is a 50-pin array in one of the
corners...), what has been left out with the MC68030RC, does it have an
MMU (it has an FPU)...
The MC68030RC has a data and instruction cache 256Bytes big each iirc.
It's a nippy processor running at around 10MIPS. It has an MMU built
in unlike the 68851 the 68020 needed. The FPU is external and is a
68882 PGA unit at 50MHz as well. Your 68030 is running at 50MHz. You
can add 128Mb to a Blizzard 1230IV (the 4th revision) on the main board
and a further 64Mb on the SCSI card iirc.
> What is this external floppy drive (see above)?
It's a high density floppy drive; you lucky devil! :) This means if
you indulge in Mac or PC emulation you can access high density disks
which is necesary. Also you can use High Density Amiga disks. keep
hold of this baby, these are very sought after; and when Tudor Davie's
ankle is better, I'll be getting one too... :)
> Thnx in advance to anyone who can help me out. I'll probably have
some more questions soon!

The MC/XC68030RC is either a 40MHz or 50MHZ PGA chip. A RC 68030 has
all caches and an MMU. The 680EC30 (in 16-40MHz only) has no MMU.

Oh I saw that bit, but my post wasn't a further one about the contents, but
instead was a question/comment with a mention of my thoughts.
While we are on about CD contents, how much of a lead time do you tend to
need on reader requests? And who has to ask for a web site to be included
- readers or the web site owner? It's just that given a couple of people
on here have mentioned Oktagon cards, and I'm sure a few people have
problems with OS3.5 and older versions IDEFix, having the files from
http://www.elaborate-bytes.com would help solve many problems ...

Okay, that's true. It has been proven by experiment. There are really
only two options, either the speed of light is constant, or time is
constant. Time isn't, people just assume it's common sense to think
time is constant, because we move at non-relativistic speeds. But it
doesn't take much of a leap of understanding to realise that time is
just another dimension of our universe.

Websites are never "leached" from the net, unlike some other CDs in the
past... :) so the best thing to do, if you want Elaborate Bytes websites on
our CD, is to contact Olive Kastl and ask him to put it on there...

22/30. I feel that it is a quiz more suited to programmers. How the
hell am I supposed to know what functions are in what libraries? I did
better on the history bits though.

Me thinks that it wasn't written my someone whos native language is
english. Last version of WB (on the quiz) is surely 3.0!?!

It's not essential, it just makes it easier for the programmer. With the
added advantage of a better looking, "standard" interface. I say
standard because it's become the standard for so many pieces of
useful software, software that I couldn't, or at least wouldn't want to,
live without.

Some people may be good at programming, but have no real skills in
writing an user friendly, attractive GUI. These are entirely different
sets of skills. MUI makes it easier for programmers who might
otherwise release a command line only program, which may not put
you off, but it would alienate a lot of users.

Well the thing was, I'm not that bothered about having it on there myself,
but I thought it might be useful for others to have the latest versions of
the archives from the site on the CD, such as the latest (and last IIRC)
OktaPussy and the OS3.5-aware IDEFix archives ...

No that is a terrible price if that is all it has in it. As gorgeous as an
A3000T is (and Christ knows I'd kill for one) it would have to be packed to
the rafters with gear (060 card, buckets of Ram, CD drives, HDs etc).

That's the way the world works, I'm afraid. You're not a social
security fund, and neither are they. Software developers deserve to
be paid for their work the same as everyone else. Of course they
shouldn't expect people to pay for their products if they don't think
they're worth it. But similarly, if you don't think a program's worth
paying for, you shouldn't be using it in the first place.

That's what I thought, but 3.0 was ready in August 1992 for the A4000;
2.1 was launched in October 1992 iirc.

Hmm, Well I use Voyager *all* the time, and I get a crash about once in 30

Well, hmm, it only took 10 minutes for my AmiRC and V3 keys to come, and I
registered from a public library in leicester. I dont see how it could even
take an hour to click on the 'registeration' button thats on vapor.com, or
you could of used the big massive "now avialibe with secure online ordering

Hi Guys,
If you would like to have your website included (or updated) on Amiga
Format magazine's CD #51, (issue 136, May 2000), could you please
upload your archived website site to:
ftp2.futurenet.co.uk/pub/incoming
The ABSOLUTE deadline is *Thursday 2nd March* but, we would appreciate
it if you could upload your site sooner. Any websites arriving after the
deadline will not be updated. Please prefix your archive with "AF_"
for example: AF_MyWWWSite.lha.
**************************************************************************
Important Notes:
1. We have now re-designed the layout of the "Essential Websites" page on
the Amiga Format CD and it now includes a hyperlink to your wesite on
the net allowing Amiga users who have access to the internet to visit
your wesite directly. We now also require the complete URL to your
website and this should be contained in a text file called "URL.txt"
within your archive.
2. Due to space restrictions, websites are now updated on *every CD* basis
so, if you don't update your website you'll probably find your website
won't be included on the Amiga Format CD!
3. We make every possible effort to include your website on the Amiga
Format CD-ROM. However, due to space restrictions, we are sometimes
forced to make space for alternative data. For this reason we are
unable to offer any firm guarantees that your website will be included.
4. Some of you have been sending your updated websites to the Future server
several times over the course of a particular month. In the future could
you please refrain from doing this. One update per month is fine! ;-)
5. If you have any problems uploading your files to the Future server,
please email: ftp@futurenet.co.uk to let them know!
**************************************************************************
If your company has any demo programs (utilities or games) that you would
also like to have included on the CD, please email me as soon as possible
with details and approximate byte sizes.

This might ruffle some feathers but is copying OS1.3 hardcore piracy ?,
well proably not. OS3.5 is of course TOTALY diffrent. Having said that
i just grabed North&South from the site, which i will play later for

It sounds like the is the fault of your SCSI controller, since it works
fine with other controllers.

I get the "No disk present in device ZIP:" type message, exactly as I
should. ZIP: and ZIP.0: are treated as if they were separate physical
devices, like DF0: and DF1:.

No, I'm referring to a comment Ben made about a previous thread, some
months ago. I refrained from contributing because I thought it was rude
(or at least impolite) but I thought Ben's description of "ingenuous"

I believe it is, although strangely enough to be "Gruntled" is the same as
being "Disgruntled"...
Whelmed, however is a different matter. You can be Overwhelmed (Original
source of the word), but not Underwhelmed, or even Whelmed... :/

No you aren't. You're travelling away from each other at less than 1KM/h
under the speed of light. Relative velocities are not just the total of
individual velocities - on Earth, speeds are generally low enough that
this doesn't matter and as a result you can make approximations. That
doesn't mean they're true on the relativistic scale.

Next person to mention the speed of light on this list will be ejected for a
week. Of course, it'll probably seem longer than that, due to the
relativistic nature of it all...

It is very unlikely that AmiBench will appear on Amiga Format CD Roms, not
because I dont want it to (any kind of advertising is good) but because
AmiBench is CGI-BIN driven, Sadly, There is no way to make the website work

Hi =
Just got af 134 and it looks better , at least there is no bulky cd box =
There is a review on Page 38 of Voyager 3 , IMHO Voyager is a good web
browser but very unstable for some reason. 88% is a bit high.
Pages 18-19 about the roms swap looks great apart from the empty space
in the top right hand corner which could have been used for a ad or
something. =
last point, on page 62 Mailbag there is a old photo of someone in the top=
left corner which needs to be changed to something with an amiga made ba=
ckground.
and about the b/w cartoon on pages 62-63 ? surely the mailbag could print=
a few more letters if this was not there =
But as saying that the mag is still as good as it was in the early 90~s =
keep the CD Jacket :)

Hmm, I said I thought I needed to write a boxout there, but our art ed
convinced me otherwise. Even if he hadn't I would have been pushed to write
to fill that much space...

Not really. We don't get that many letters since the advent of email. The
issue we're working on now even had to pinch one off afb to fill some
space...

About two weeks or so I wrotte an e-mail to various main persons in the
Amiga exposing my concerns about a problem that happened to me and that
could happend to anyone. It was mainly about buying new hardware,
specifically PPC hardware, but software too. I expressed the problem
that if I buy a PPC accelerator I, most likely, like Fleecy Moss said
in an interview, won=B4t be able to run the new upcaming Amiga OS, and in
that interview it was also said that if I buy an IBM powerPC
motherboard I will, most likely be able to run the new OS. So I=B4d be
wasting money in a PPC accelerator, while I could be buying for more or
less the same price, hardware that was prepared for the new Amiga. This
is quite serious and I sopose many have thought about it. The answer
came from Fleecy Moss himself, and I haven=B4t posted it yet, because I
didn=B4t knew if I was sopposed to do that. I asked but got no answer, so
since in my e-mail I said it was something that could affect us all, I
now consider it is of course to share with other persons that can have
that problem. I=B4m sorry you guys if I sometimes post and just disapear,
but I=B4m in a computer room in the University of the Algarve and can=B4t
do all I want.
Regards:
Jos=E9
The mail from Fleecy is here(:):
We will do our best to support emulation of the PPC hybrids,
so SW bought for PPC boards should still work on the
classic emulator. There is no reason not to buy SW for PPC
boards.
For the HW, we are talking to a few companies about the potential
for creating a motherboard which can take the PPC cards and then
come up as a standard PPC machine, on which the new Amiga will run.
We are trying.

Why sell the computer? I've had an Amiga through out my time at university
(nearly at an end now), and I've used lots of Student Loan money to bring a
humble a1200 almost up to date. I'm even doing my final year project on
the poor thing!

I am not able to check my afb messages to frequent...
I last browsed 300 messages.....and did not spot any replye...
I only get 800KB/s with this SCSI-2 controller, and I KNOW SCSI-2 is
faster
than 800KB/s...but need to know what to do to get it to speed up.....
Burning CD's is slow with such a slow controller...

constantly. What I need to know it, whats the best way? I have a network
card for each pc and have been looking at the pcmcia card from eyetech (do
power do any?) so:
1) is linux suitable to run a small network from?
2) what software would I need for it?
3) is samba the best idea for doing all this?
4) how can I do the pcmcia fix myself?
5) whats the best speed I could expect to get out of it?
6) can I whoop some ass in a quake deathmatch?
Remember though, the main thing is that they can all share the net
connection

I don't know how fast it is meant to be, but it can't drive my Yamaha 4416
CD Rewriter at full speed - I have to limit it to 2x speed if I don't want
coasters every time. The drive works fine at full speed on my CS-PPC's
SCSI 3 interface though ..
So do you have one of these cards or are you just "interested" in getting
one?

Thanks for your feedback! Two external layouters are working now on the
ParaGlide PCB. We hope the layout is finished until 2000-03-16, in the
middle of March. The following prototype production will take 3 weeks. If
we are lucky and there are no errors in the PCB, these prototypes will be
fully functional and the complete set of manufacturing data can be reused
for mass production.
In this best case the mass production ParaGlides could start shipping end
of April 2000.
But any errors in the first prototype PCB will cause a 3 to 4 weeks delay.
Thanks for your patience!

So what patches could I ditch then? I'd still need MCP, Visualprefs,

3.5 would just increase the chances of something breaking, not reduce them.

But I didn't know it didn't know, if you know what I mean. That's why
I asked.

Ah, but first you need an ad... Also, I think AF would look better if
it can keep editorial on separate pages from adverts for as long as
possible.

Noooo! Don`t get rid of Sabrina! I know I could read them all online,
I know that they`re not about Amiga anymore, but they`re still fine
strips that make me laugh.

Dear Ben,
Weather`s lousy, have come down with a cold. Wish you were here instead
of me. Lots of love, Jon.

Hi Matt

was going to buy. Well a couple of days ago that bargain arrived.
(60+10 p&p for an A1200, Blizzard 1230 030/50MHz accelerator card with
8Mb, 170Mb HDD, Multisync monitor, external 1.76Mb XL floppy drive
(whatever this is - HD floppy drive even?), several leads, joysticks,
mice etc. and a sh*tload of floppy disks in disk boxes!)

May I add to that: Only 60 + 10 p&p? Bargin city :-).

know it'...)

You might want to consider fiddling around in there long enough to give
a blood offering too, just to show you care ;-)

You`d better say sorry again to everyone else to whom you sent this ;-)
I can`t really see the point of AmiBench appearing on the CD since by
the time you looked at the site, isn`t it likely that what you wanted
would already be sold?
